What does it mean to be healthy?

Really think about that question. Write down the words you attribute with being healthy: radiant, energised, happy, content, calm… and compare those words to how you feel now, at this very moment. Now, ask yourself… ARE YOU HEALTHY?

If you aren’t, what went wrong? Where did your health go? When did how you feel now become the new normal?

Many of us will be able to track the descent into un-healthiness with our attitudes towards food. Food has become so disrespected in our culture, where quantity is more important than quality. How many of you know the nutritional quality of the foods you are eating on a daily basis? Can you name the vitamins and minerals in each food that you consume?

If you can’t, then this is a problem and you may be eating yourself sick. Speaking to a naturopath, she mentioned to me that for many of us our diets deny the body nutrients it needs to maintain optimum health and that we are likely to be malnourished. Symptoms of being depleted of nutrients include fatigue, poor quality hair and skin, depression, tight muscles, poor concentration… sound familiar?

It is sad that, even discussing this with my naturopath friend, many people simply refuse to change.

They do nothing until their bodies give up and break down, allowing disease and illness to set in. Oftentimes they blame “genetics” when in reality it was poor nutrition, and what makes it sadder is they will still not seek nutritional support, preferring a life on medication to just changing their diet!

Do you want to change your eating habits? Then change your attitudes towards food. Repeat after me “natural foods are nutritious and good for my body, and my body is full of goodness.” Let this be your mantra for 2013!
